Honest Abe counterfeited 5000 passes for his people to c ram the Republican convention hall in 1860.

He gave cabinet posts to some very vile political players in exchange for support.

He countered the military efforts of the rebels with a enormous army, that did lay the South prostrate.
Could he have fought a milder more defensive war where the North firmly withstood early Confederate efforts, and aggressively brought them back to discussion, after 1 winter of southern military losses, and no strategic gain?

Or did some ba*****s in the north really seek a destruction of the south, not just a suppression of a rebellion.

His party abondened the blacks to virtual slavery within a few years.

So that was not the Republican goal, apparently, but dissolution of the south, and power to the north.

There were very few true motives amongst the powerful on either side, at least it is not reflected in there actions.

Politics is War without honor.
Politics is War without morals.
It us the playground of liars and thieves.
The only prerequisite is ambition for power.
