Perhaps this photo has been posted or widely seen before but one thing that really struck me about it is the brass mat with the legend E Pluribus Unum (out of many, one). In the movie Gettysburg, Tom Chamberlain says he's fighting the war to free the slaves. But here, on his actual photo, his focus is on union. I don't know how serious the real man was about abolition but it's interesting to me that he really seems to fall in with the sentiments of most White Northerners: it's a war for Union. But in any case, "Don't call me Lawrence, Tom."

In the movie, he says he's fighting for both.
