Recently picked up an unknown sling. The sling is 46" long X 1" wide. There is an oval makers mark stamp which only a few letters that can be identified. It seems to have a partial date 186_...?
If anyone could help shed some light on this sling, it would be greatly appreciated.
Original, repro, etc?

Try taking tracing paper and shade over top the letters and see if u can't get them to pop out some on paper which may help u figure it out. Or I would take it to nearest National Park or Civil War Park and see if they can't help u out. Third number looks like an 8....188 but of course I'm no expert and wear glasses lol. Looks cool good luck!

Interesting markings and sling. IMHO the rivets are post war but with a clearer photo or name on the makers mark I'm sure we can nail it down. Lets see if @Package4 has a clue.

Take some baby powder or talcum powder and sprinkle over the marking, then wipe off excess. The remainder should give you a better idea and will not hurt the leather.

Thanks to all for the info and innovative techniques.
Thanks Ray. I picked this sling up at the Richmond show I saw you at this past weekend. The vender knew it was not period and practically gave it to me , so I got it just to put on my 1863 Tower Enfield, until I could find a correct sling. I will try the techniques and get back to the forum.

Looks like it say Nussbaum on the bottom, which led me to believe German...…...Great seeing you, sorry we didn't get a chance to talk more. Old Sarge picked up the neatest leather lot at auction and we were trying to determine what a particular sling was used for...…...
