Forrest Larry Cockerham passed away

I just saw this today. It is so hard to believe. He was a good man and will be missed. No one fought harder to preserve the memory of the Confederate Soldier.

Wow !! I just saw this. I pray that his family finds peace and comfort. It'll be strange not seein his posts here. Rest in peace Larry, now you are getting to learn the truth that we all seek, from the ones who lived it !

Just got home from a long trip and got back on line. I'm so sorry to hear about Larry's passing. He was a gentleman and a scholar, and you can't say that about a lot of people anymore. May God rest him and comfort his family.

I spent an afternoon last summer with Larry when he came thru Springfield. I found him to be knowledgable, funny, humble, and above all a kind and gentle man.. the very epitome of a Gentleman. One of the things I shared with him was a love for North alabama, me because it is my home, Larry because NBF wandered around the neighborhood a lot..

I regret to confirm that the news is true. The details are still coming in, but apparently Larry had a heart attack on the 12th and subsequently passed away.

Then it most likely had to be the night of the 12th or very early on Sunday the 13th.

What a unique and dedicated individual. His presence will be missed here.

My condolences to his family and friends. Larry's one of the few posters I've have had conversations with through personal message. A very sincere and kind man. I discovered he was nearly the exact same age as my father. That significance was personal to me when we discussed thing later on, even if butting heads on occasion. I never thought of him as a poster, but as a person, one generation away.

Man, tough thing to hear. My thoughts and prayers to those that knew him a lot more than me. I think I'm going to call my dad tonight.

I just hung up the phone from talking with my dad. I still love to hear his life experiences, even if I've heard them a hundred times.

I always enjoyed reading Larry's posts. I'd go out of my way to read what he had to say about the Battle of So & So or about his opinion regarding different Cvil War officers. I'll miss his knowledge, the way he delivered it, and his down home good natured humor.

Several times I started to get on here and thank Larry for the help he gave me at the Franklin Civil War show. Even though I am from west Tennessee, he spent a good 15 minutes helping me look up a relative, and who to contact about joining the SCV. As I left he gave me his card, and I started to turn and tell him how much I enjoyed his posts on here but didn't. Now I can't. God bless him and his family.

I could not believe (at first) that Larry passed away, it took a bit for the reality of it to sink in!

When I signed on about a year ago, I found early on that Larry was a more than a cut above the ardent Southern Heritage folk I'm used to dealing with here in Texas. Though He/I didn't always agree on everything, He left me wishing a lot of folk would be more like him.

I will miss his presence on this BB. When I get up to Winstead Hill again, I'll think of him and his fellow Camp members setting a good piece of land aside in memory of our Confederate Soldiers.

He has my thanks for that.

Did you join? If you did, I'm pretty sure that would be enough for him.....and if not--he got to tell you about something he loved and help someone with genealogy, and I know that was something that he loved as well.

Several of you have mentioned calling your fathers tonight. That would please Larry a lot if it inspired someone to tell a family member how much they mean to them, or if we did a little research because of him.

All day it occurred to me that for over a year, I've either had a conversation with Larry or read something he's written almost every day. For that short time I'm very grateful, as I am for having all of you to discuss and sometimes cuss with. It also makes me very sad that we've lost such a wonderful and charming viewpoint on this board. My loss compared to that of his family and those of you who have had the opportunity to meet him is very small--and I want to say I'm thinking of all those he touched in so many ways. God bless you, Larry. We look forward to meeting you once again, maybe on Winstead Hill or at the Forrest home.

Very saddened to hear this news of Larry's passing. I will always remember his posts from the heart with not a hint of ill will. Larry was a true bright spot on this forum that we all might try to emulate. He will be missed.

Larry played his cards straight, In my year and ahalf on the Foram he could get silly and have fun, but never slanted history to support his position.

A man to use as a model, his shoes can't be filled.
