Lake Shetek Massacre Memorial Dedication 1925

I just picked up this small snapshot of the dedication of the Lake Shetek massacre monument in Minnesota which took place on August 20, 1862. The monument was dedicated on August 2, 1925. The Lake Shetek massacre took place during the Dakota War of 1862 when the Sioux went to war against the settlers in the Dakota Territory.

Think its first monument to victims of massacre by Indians i'd seen, the other way around seems more publicized these days.

I dont know anything about this massacre but that last sentence in the newaper clipping about a "thunderstorm driving the Indians to cover" intrigues me.

Reminds me of the tornado/hurricane which some say caused the British to abandon Washington DC during the War or 1812.

The Wyoming Monument was finished in 1833, there are probably some older ones out there.
