Today June 19th is Juneteenth Day. It important for the Afician American Community, They celebrate it just like the 4th of July. They hold many picnics and parties and have special foods that are served.

Some foods are strawberry soda, watermelon, strawberries, red beans and rice, barbeque, and red velvet cake.

Red is the important color as represents blood that many slaves lost during slavery.

The foods are symbolic and much enjoyed by all.

I had a Civil War Round Table meeting that prevented me from attending the local Juneteenth calibration. It was advertised that there would be food, fun, arts and craft, and educational activities. I have some doubts that any of the food trucks sold strawberry soda, watermelon, strawberries, red beans and rice, barbeque, and red velvet cake. I many have had to settle for elephant ears and and corndogs. I am not quite sure what a funnel cake even is.

I now believe that "Juneteenth" could be any number of days in the month of June. It is when the presence of Union soldiers (to watch Maximillian in Mexico) who announced it. For instance, on June 29 the Union cavalry reached Austin and announced that the South lost. The southern whites responded that the slaves were still slaves but if Uncle Abraham's soljers said so, some slaves believed they were emancipated. See Michael Martin's The 4th Wisconsin Infantry & Cavalry.... pagee 343.
