Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain Antebellum

Do you know how old he was in this photo? It looks like if you dressed him in a T-Shirt that he could be on any college campus today.

I haven't the foggiest, it could be in '58 as that's the earliest I can think of him teaching, and I don't recall him growing out his moustache until around Gettysburg (I could be wrong here).

And yeah, even with the muttonchops he look like any 'ol hipster.

Wow - I've never ever seen a photo of Chamberlain without the mustache!

Great job as always Zuzah
"Beard without mustache, that's hot, Amish hot"

Did you know that the reason the Amish don't wear mustaches is because they were associated with the military?

Chamberlain writes to his wife on November 22, 1862,
Mr. Brown took the opportunity today of cutting my beard to suit his notion of my face. He has left me with a ferocious mustache and my bit of an imperial only. ... You would not know me.
