I haven't the foggiest, it could be in '58 as that's the earliest I can think of him teaching, and I don't recall him growing out his moustache until around Gettysburg (I could be wrong here).

And yeah, even with the muttonchops he look like any 'ol hipster.

I just think if you could pan down a bit you would see that he was holding a skateboard. The suit he is wearing just makes me laugh though. Other than that it is very contemporary to today.

I agree but it is hard for me to imagine Joshua telling his men at LRT "hey dudes, lets stop these gnarly rebs"

He was 31, the photo was taken in 1859.

Thanks! Wow, he looks like his is about 22. Mustache did a world of difference for him. (uniform didn't hurt either).

Did you know that the reason the Amish don't wear mustaches is because they were associated with the military?

Chamberlain writes to his wife on November 22, 1862,

Mr. Brown took the opportunity today of cutting my beard to suit his notion of my face. He has left me with a ferocious mustache and my bit of an imperial only. ... You would not know me.
