I was in Vicksburg last year, but didn't make it to the headquarters. The park map online says it is under restoration.

I know it will be open during the last week of May, which is when Vicksburg is holding its 150th celebrations.

It's nice to know some of these landmarks survived. I'd have thought they would already have been restored, although perhaps Pemberton's HQ might not have been on The List of priorities thought important post war. That's a perfectly lovely house, thanks for the pic! My grgrgrandfather was there at the siege with the 50th PA, we'll be getting to Vicksburg for a GOOD look-around at some point. This will be on the list, hope the restoration will be complete.

Glad to hear they'll have Pemberton's former headquarters open for tours soon. I haven't been to Vicksburg in several years, unfortunately, but the Balfour House used to be open for tours as well. I was lucky enough to get a one-person tour one time. I happened to show up right after a large group went through, and the tour guide was nice enough to take me through by myself. Emma Balfour left a diary of her experiences before and during the siege, and after reading it, I had to see her house. Assuming they still give tours, it's worth the visit.

I got to tour it last June, but it is very hit and miss. I got Terry Winschell's phone number from the Park rangers and he was cutting the grass and said come down I will let you tour. We did and he was very gracious and informative. But you may have to be assertive, they don't keep regular hours.
