* John Hunt Morgan and Raiders Surrender Monument.

* The John Hunt Morgan Surrender Site is the place where Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan and his Raiders surrendered to Federal troops following the Battle of Salineville, Ohio. The site is located at a crossroads between the villages of Gavers and West Point in Columbiana County, Ohio, about 60 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 23, 1973 for its military significance.

Everyone that hears how far northeast Morgan's Raiders advanced in Ohio is completely shocked.

I know most members do not find these raids very interesting (judging by responses) but I think the stories attached to these American Civil War events are extremely fascinating.

Wonderful pictures. I have got to get there.

You know my husband and I very interested in all about John Hunt Morgan. As I have posted before 3 of my husband's ancestors rode with him. One went on the great raid and was captured and was prisoner for rest of war. Another was killed in Ky. and another severely wounded in Ky.

The issue entitled "The Great Raid" with the photo of Ulysses S. Grant's childhood home on the cover is the best issue regarding the Morgan Raids.

I used the rest of my subscription redemption money to purchase the John Hunt Morgan issues. You can find the back issues on Amazon or eBay.

Maybe I'm wrong, having never focused much on John Hunt Morgan, but he seemed like a brash commander. His raids never seemed to end well, which is a good way to determine if the raid was successful. His notifying Richmond on the cery day he departed on his last raid says a lot about him. He did it to avoid being told to stand down, and in the end, his raid cost the CSA a few good men and horses with little or no gain.
