I doubt it. The planning that went into the operation was not that of someone who was insane. There were some basic miscalculations about the slaves' response to his plan, but he managed to convince a number of supporters that it would work.

At some point in the raid IMHO he determined to be a martyr and betrayed his men by taking them down that path. I doubt he was "nuts."
Not unlike a cult leader.
