Not a proper image to begin with, found it in 4750x5900, so I'm assuming it's a re-print scanned at high DPI, but I don't know - I found another version with a photographer listed as J.A. Sheldon, or Shcldon, as Google would've wanted it, but the chair is strikingly similar to the one found in Brady's studio; I don't know, anyway, enjoy.

Indeed, I've only done one good colorization of him, and that photograph was 500x700; Him, Stuart, Stonewall, Forrest, and Longstreet are some of the commanders I haven't seen any proper photographs of, and it bugs me to no end.

Hi Zuzah - Boy, this is a tough one. I like what you were able to do with this one, considering what you had to work with. I agree with you, this is probably not the original. I tried my hand at it, too - and found it didn't pick up color to my liking. It has a tendency in both our efforts to look closer to an illustration. Still, Hood had an interesting face, so I've posted my "take" on it here.

The line on the jacket I was never able to get right, what color would it be?

Anyway, yeah, it's definitely a scan of a reprint, I'm more than sure of it, it's not only badly exposed it's also scanned at an overly high DPI, which doesn't really help anything - It's unfortunate Hood doesn't have more actual photographs floating around, he was an interesting looking fella.

That's very good! Even though it may not have been the best image to work with, you've gotten an interesting effect - stormy, kind of a vaguely ominous feel. Perfect for this general!

Not sure if you heard, but Gen Hood's long lost personal papers were found last summer, in boxes in the home of a descendent in Pennsylvania. Among the treasure trove of letters and documents were two never before seen photos of him. One is the postwar photograph from which the image of Hood in his memoirs "Advance and Retreat" was made. But the other is a picture of him standing, on crutches, presumably taken in Richmond just before he joined the Army of Tennessee in the early Spring on 1864. It is colorized and beautiful. It will dominate the cover of an upcoming book "John Bell Hood: The Rise, Fall, and Resurrection of a Confederate General" (Savas Beatie, May 2013). I had seen that photograph actually and I noticed it was colorized, would you have any idea where one would go to obtain a higher resolution version?

They are amazingly beautiful, and it's why I continue to be amazed by them - the contrast with the head and other areas of skin is just mindblowing when colorized.

There are some decent ones of Longstreet either pre or post war on the Library of Congress. But he is barely recognizable, because he has a short beard instead of the long one you think of him with.
