JOHN BELL HOOD and The War For Southern Independence written by Richard M. McMurry [University of Kentucky Press, 1982 and University of Nebraska Press 1992] This well-written, well researched and documented, biography of the stubborn, politically connected Confederate General offers much explanation of Hood's actions during the war. The author stresses Hood's relationships with Lee, Davis, Hardee and Johnston as well as Hood's personality. Having wondered what made the man tick, I learned a considerable amount about him. A very good reference for the Army of Tennessee 1863-65.
