President Lincoln is often known as the Great Emancipator but could Davis deserve the title? We can not know what would have occurred had the South not seceded. Even Lincoln thought it would take decades for slavery to slowly die out once slavery was stopped in the Territories. Who knows what the next president after Lincoln could have done to sped up or slow down the process. For all we know slavery may have existed for another hundred years. We know for certain that when Davis ordered the firing on Fort Sumter that slavery ended in less than 5 years. Tens of millions may have been born and died in slavery if Lincoln had proceeded without Davis' help. Although he did not intend to do so, Davis had a great impact on ending slavery sooner rather than latter, Davis may have even had a greater impact than Lincoln.
