Location: Piccadilly Cafeteria, 4800 I-55 North Jackson

Speaker: Dr. Michael C. Trotter Topic: The Association of Medical Officers of the Army and Navy of the Confederacy: The Last Repository of Confederate Medicine

Fortunately, members of the Jackson Civil War Round Table do not have to look very far to find qualified speakers. The speaker, Dr. Michael C. Trotter, for the April meeting hails from Greenville, Mississippi.
Dr. Trotter received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and his medical degree from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgical training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and followed this with fellowships in vascular surgery at Baptist Hospitals in Memphis and cardiothoracic surgery at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans.

He practiced at Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville, Mississippi until his retirement from surgical practice last year. He maintains a strong interest in medical history, particularly surgical history of the South and Civil War medicine. Dr. Trotter has authored multiple articles on these subjects, all of which have been published in peer-reviewed journals. He has been a guest lecturer and invited speaker at numerous regional and national venues, including the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in 2007, 2009, and 2012. Most recently he chaired the organizing committee for the 17th Annual Meeting of the Southern Association for the History of Medicine and Science, held last month in Jackson. Current research projects include the medical history of Nathan Bedford Forrest, the influence of Confederate military service on the noteworthy medical career of John Allan Wyeth, and wound care and antiseptics during the Civil War.
