A few of my friends & I visited the Jackson Death Site yesterday near Guinea Station in Caroline County, Virginia. We had just come from showing respect to a number of my kin at a nearby cemetery. Multiple branches of my family tree were in the area during 18th, & 19th centuries as well as plenty of their descendants today.
The most obvious difference to anyone who has visited before (years ago), will be the name. This place used to be called, The Stonewall Jackson Shrine. I believe the change to "Jackson Death Site" was 5 years ago. Not that big of a deal. However, once inside the house...... it became a big deal.
The little gift shop is gone. No longer can you buy anything Stonewall Jackson related on site.
They have removed everything of significance from the house. The bed Jackson died in, the couch, the clock above the fireplace, etc..
It's all gone.
The park rangers wouldn't say where any of it was moved to, & their cover story is, the sprinkler system is problematic and they didn't want any of the items to get damaged. There is no plan or schedule to have the sprinkler system fixed. FWIW, I saw zero water damage on the walls, or anywhere from the sprinkler system.
If that isn't enough, there were these hand written messages on grease boards throughout the building:
I found the whole thing utterly disgusting. We listened to a park ranger tell a very dry story of Jackson's death. He went out of his way to tell nothing that would make Jackson appear human, or a man of the character most who've studied him know. The entire focus of this "museum" now, is slavery, period. I was shocked. I found the whole thing to be in poor taste, & needlessly pandering to the modern political narrative.
No mention of anything that runs counter to the narrative, or that would depict Jackson as he was, a unique character in the history of the South, & the conflict he gave his life in.
Anybody visiting this site wishing to learn about Stonewall Jackson will be surely disappointed.
We didn't leave until we displayed the colors in front of the entrance
