I finally did it, I was able to purchase my first artillery shoulder boards but wait there's more!
I saw these 6 years ago and they were in a grouping. I asked several times but the dealer was firm in not breaking up the items. After forgetting about them years ago I checked one last time and they were still there!
It gets better, not only are they artillery they're also so minty. Most likely bought in preparation for a promotion that never made their way onto a uniform. They're a 1st lieutenants boards which aren't as plentiful as other ranks like major or LT colonel AND they're double border artillery boards!!!! Guess what else, they're IDENTIFIED
Identified to an officer in the 11th US COLORED HEAVY ARTILLERY of Rhode Island. The 11th was previously designated the 8th and originally the 14th. He enlisted originally in the militia in 1861 and mustered into heavy artillery as a lieutenant of company A. I couldn't snag the beautiful eagle badge because it was sold before I called but I can let that go for these. The rest of the grouping was fantastic it had multiple inscribed artillery manuals and two more sets of boards. The artillery manuals were gifted by another officer to Lieutenant Hazard and the grouping had the officers eagle badge too, all from the same soldier's family estate.
