Issue Weapon and Uniform

It was suggested that I check in this forum. My GG Grandfather was in the 120th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. They were part of the Army of the Ohio and went to Atlanta with Sherman then chased Hood while the March to the Sea was in progress. What I wanted to find out was what the issue weapon and uniform was for that unit, but don't know where to look for that information. Any help would be appreciated.

Simple Sack Coat, sky blue trousers w/ a forage cap or slouch hat. M1861/63 series would be the most likely after early 1864.

Your absolute best bet would be to contact the Indiana Historical society and see if they have specific data on the 120th Indiana. I've parused some of their collection and while a bit difficult to navigate the staff was very helpful.

It could be anything. What they got early on is probably not what they had in the middle end of the war either and could even differ within companies (yes even on the Union side).

Best bet is what Johan says and check the state historical society, look for pictures, newspaper accounts, and if there is no regimental history published then look for another unit in the same brigade because sometimes they have info of their comrades or the very least you can put 2 and 2 together and come up with 3 and a 1/2.

According to Todd's Military Equipage, the 120th Indiana was issued P53 Enfields when they
mustered into service in 1864. Otherwise you would expect the std Western theater ensemble
(sack coat, forage hat/slouch, etc) as far as equipment.

Since the last Federal purchases of P53s was in July 1863, one can assume these rifles were
issued from arms returned to storage. Hey, it could be worse--quite a few of the IN units got the
2nd class Austrian 1854 Lorenz.
