Is this really a rebel though?

Here's another militiaman that was a part of Bill Turners collection of images, that's labeled as confederate. Personally, I don't know about that assessment, but he is cool looking. He's wearing an nco sword belt plate used among union troops at the time. Any ideas why he might be labeled as a reb?

Certainly looks like a militia uniform. Coat looks to be of the claw-hammer style, with straps for epaulettes on the shoulder.

What side of the Mason-Dixon line is not evident. Gray uniforms etc. were common among volunteer militia companies nationwide in 1861.

This is true @damYankee. However having known Bill Turner he must have had some reason why he thought this gentleman might be a Confederate. Unfortunately we will never know. Rest In Peace Bill.


One could hope. When I get back to the shop on the 11th, I'll ask to if I can get the image out of its case and see if there's anything written inside.
