That is exactly what I would look for, but still be careful. A lot of people take things they bought from "sutlers" at the reenactments and try to age them to look old.

I have been told that brass from the civil war era had a more reddish tint than today's modern brass which has a more goldish tint.

I bought one just like it in a gift shop and knew it was just a modern buckle. I still have it. Mine is exactly the same.
