is this a southern knife?

hello fellers, i am new here. i was born here in SC 67 years ago and will die here. i look forward to the fellowship on the forum. i acquired this knife a few years ago. i don't know if it is a real period knife or fake. it was definitely made from an old file and has one pin hole for the handle, do you have an opinion. thanks for the help,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

any thoughts on it? i live about 30 miles from Charleston SC, a friend took it to a civil war show on the Yorktown ship for me and about 6 venders/collectors looked at it and said it looked real to them. i don't know,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
 
It is a blacksmith made knife. The thickness of the blade is an indication that it was not made by a blade smith. Knives forged with a file often have that hefty look.

Compare the details of this knife with those made by an excellent blade smith:


This isn't to say that your knife isn't a good one. Any competent blacksmith could have made it. I belong to the Appalachian Area Chapter of Blacksmiths. Everybody everywhere forges a knife or two or… out of a file. There is no exclusive "southern" pattern.

Its one of those items that you just don't know as most guys in the South back then had a side knife or hunting knife. There is now way to say its Confederate.
