Is this a long shot?

Found this M1840 Cavalry Saber at a local Antique Mall yesterday, and I saw the initials JSR Moore on it. I went on Fold3 and found a Confederate Cavalry soldier named James R. Moore, and he was captured in Ohio (where the Antique Mall is located). Is this a complete long shot, or do you guys think I possibly ID'ed the saber? The initials match his name and he was captured in Ohio which is where the saber is located. Let me know what you think, thanks!

Is there a makers mark on the blade up near the guard or initial stamped on the pommel. If you can get him to $500 I would buy it anyway as it's not a bad price for just the sword

Yup thats a good price on that sword. Much better than that Frankenstein musket you posted on another thread from the same shop. Thank goodness you did not buy that one! You can clean the scabbard up some. Has what looks like the original washer. Wish the leather grip was a little better but looks like the original wire wrap.
