True, but after the Confederates left the area without finding the hidden colors, Sergeant Evans apparently made it back to the 6th Wisconsin with the colors and delivered them to Dawes. He had them with him as he rode Cemetery Ridge on July 3rd.

Evans holed-up at the Jacob Hollinger house, which Pfanz states was at the corner of modern-day Hwy 30 where it became the York Pike and Hanover St. by the Sunoco gas station. I do not know if that house is still there. He sources Herdegen and Beaudot that Evans made his way (probably painfully and awkwardly) to Culp's Hill on July 4 with the flag in hand. They state that Evans might have used the flag staff as a crutch and the Hollinger girls hid the flag in the bed.
