Happy Day after St. Patrick's Day! Earlier in the week, I decided to experiment with this recipe for Irish Stew from Mr. Charles Francatelli (A Plain Cookery Book for the Working Classes, 1852) I feel like this follows very nicely after the really fascinating thread on barbeques and how simple inexpensive food often becomes embellished as time goes on.

My mother used to make something similar to that we called stewed beef. We ate that quite often when I was growing up. Sometimes she would leave the Irish potatoes out and serve it with rice. I haven't had any stewed beef in years and now, thanks to you, I have a sudden urge to make some in the not too distant future.
