Intention Wound vs. Kill Shots...Data?

At the beginning of the war many Confederates were armed with smooth bore muskets. The idea that men with such in line of battle could intentionally put a ball anywhere but vaguely "down range" is a fantasy. The federals, and later the the Confederates also, were better armed with rifled muskets. They had greater range and better accuracy. A diarist in the Stonewall Brigade tells of the situation around Washington after First Manassas. The two armies had made their entrenchments and the pickets would snipe at each other. Or, as it turned out, the federals would snipe at the Confederates and laugh as the Confederate return fire fell harmlessly short. Until the Confederates managed capture a few federals with their arms. They then began picking off the federals in their works. This was not in line of battle though.

In reading several diaries now, I've not found an account where the diarist expressed any desire to not kill the enemy. Their descriptions of firing in battle were mostly loading and firing as quickly as possible. There were some descriptions of the difficulties of locating the enemy on the battlefield. But mostly not. Usually they were close enough to see the enemy's eyes. Probably 50-100 yards. Early in the war (as late a Second Manassas or Sharpsburg) when both sides were in line of battle and not behind works, it was volley fire, toe to toe slug fest. As a practical matter, I don't think there could have been much attempting to "place" rounds. First of all, you are shooting off-hand standing. Second, you have an unwieldy, in length, musket that may have a bayonet attached. Third, and most important, you have balls whizzing past you like bees (not to mention your mess mates dropping around you). You may or may not "intend" to shoot the enemy at one or another parts of his anatomy, but your success at doing so in those conditions would be next to zero.

As for the bayonet, LTG John B. Gordon makes a point of saying in his book that they were almost never employed be either side. The bayonet was used more for psychological effect than practical use. On the defense, it told the men that they were expected to stay there and not retreat (it also conveyed that message to the enemy). On the offense, it conveys resolution to the attack. But, in final analysis, they used their rifles as clubs much more than spears. As an interesting side note, LTC Mosby, right from the start, had all of his cavalry men get rid of their swords. He never used one himself. All of his troops carried two Colt revolvers. Many times they took advantage of the superior firepower resulting from that choice.
 
Killology

Killology is the study of the psychological and physiological effects of killing and combat on the human psyche; and the factors that enable and restrain killing in these situations.

The term and field of study was invented by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman (US Army, Ret.) of the Killology Research Group in his 1995 book On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society.[1][2]

The soldier's choice

Grossman claims in his book On Killing that a soldier is faced with four options once they have entered into combat.[3] These are:

  1. Fight: as the name implies this is the standard that defines the soldiers role as actively trying to defeat the enemy by use of their training.
  2. Flight: this option involves the combatant fleeing the engagement.
  3. Posture: This action involves the soldier falsely showing active participation in combat. In actuality they are not being effective in deterring the enemy from success. This is a major point of concern for commanders as it is difficult to tell the difference between a soldier posturing or fighting.
  4. Submit: Submission to the enemy during an engagement is a direct act of surrender. In the animal kingdom, this is used by lesser combatants to prevent them from being injured after they can ascertain the triviality of their battle.
In traditional psychology most species are only warranted the flight or fight options, but this is a narrow minded view of what can be going on. Humans especially can be more complex than other animals. With Grossman's addition of Posture and Submit, a much larger scope of emotions can be analyzed.

The problem of non- or mis-firing soldiers

S.L.A. Marshall did a study on the firing rates of soldiers in World War II. He found that the ratio of rounds fired vs. hits was low; he also noted that few soldiers were aiming to hit their targets.[4] This was a problem for the US military and its allies during World War II. New training implements were developed and hit rates improved. The changes were small, but effective. First, instead of shooting at bull's-eye type tagets, the United States Army switched tosilhouette targets that mimic an average human. Training also switched from 300 yard slow fire testing to rapid fire testing with different time and distances intervals from 20 to 300 yards. With these two changes, hitting targets became a reaction that was almost automatic.

It should be noted that some authors have discredited S.L.A. Marshall's book, stating that the book may be more of an idea of what was occurring and not a scientific study of what was happening. Other historians and journalists have outright accused Marshall of fabricating his study.[5]

Another important factor that increased fire and hit rates is the development of camaraderie in training. Soldiers are taught that their actions do not only help or harm themselves, but the whole unit.[6] This recurring theme in recollections collected from war veterans is the idea that they were not fighting for themselves at the time but more concerned for the people to their left and right. This ideology is ancient and was recorded by Sun Tzu in his book The Art of War "If those who are sent to draw water begin by drinking themselves, the army is suffering from thirst."[7]

Increase in PTSD since World War II

Some research has been done to say that the increase of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the military is caused by the increase of firing rates.[3]This brings up the classic debate of correlation vs. causation. Many believe that other factors have been influencing PTSD such as decompression time after conflicts, and the lack of moral sovereignty in engagements.[3]

World War II and Vietnam

Vietnam is viewed by some as less popular war than World War II. Many people who were sent to fight there thought that there was no reason for the engagement and did not feel a moral obligation to fight. In World War II many felt that they were stopping an evil empire from overtaking the globe. This helped the World War II troops' mettle to be steadfast.

Another problem with PTSD rates after World War II is the fact that there is far less decompression time for the soldiers.[3] During World War II the main way back home was on a boat trip that took weeks. This time was spent with others who had had similar experiences and could understand the problems faced by others.[3] During Vietnam soldiers were sent via draft to one year rotations by plane. When you arrived to your unit it was usually by yourself and you were shunned. This shunning was a result of the senior members being afraid to befriend someone who had a much higher chance of being killed than the experienced combatants. Once your time in country was over you were once again sent back home by yourself. There may have been other veterans with you but they were from a plethora of other units and you did not know them well enough to share the hardships you had seen.

Finally one of the worst displays of environmental stressors was once you made it back home you were demonized by the public and discarded as a human being. Compare that to the treatment World War II veterans received when they came home from the European Theatre or the Pacific Theatre. Parades were thrown, everyone thanking the soldiers, even the invention of V for Victory was made to quickly show military members support. That symbol was changed into the Peace sign and used to show disapproval of the war in Vietnam just a few years later. These things among many others caused Vietnam to have the highest post war depression, suicide, and PTSD rates. To this day many are only now getting the counseling that they need to overcome the mental problems brought upon them from their service in Vietnam.[3]

Modern engagements

In engagements in the modern era such as Desert Shield and Desert Stormthrough Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom there is still a problem with a lack of decompression time. The training has improved so you train and deploy with the people you will be fighting with.[8] But many times when you reach home you are given time off, and if one is in a reserve unit you most likely go back to work and only see your brothers in arms once a month. This lack of time to debrief and decompress can cause a feeling of isolation that only worsens the effects of PTSD. Grossman states in his book that everyone who experiences combat comes back with PTSD, the only question is to what extent their mind and psyche are damaged and how they cope with it.


Claims

Grossman's theory, based on the World War II research of S.L.A. Marshall, is that most of the population deeply resists killing another human. While Marshall's work has been shown to be unsystematic, his findings have been corroborated by many later studies.[where?]

As a result of Marshall's work, modern military training was modified to attempt to override this instinct, by:

  • using man-shaped targets instead of bullseye targets in marksmanship practice
  • practicing and drilling how soldiers would actually fight
  • dispersing responsibility for the killing throughout the group
  • displacing responsibility for the killing onto an authority figure, i.e., the commanding officer and the military hierarchy (See the Milgram experiment)
By the time of the United States involvement in the Vietnam War, says Grossman, 90% of U.S. soldiers would fire their weapons at other people.

He also says the act of killing is psychologically traumatic for the killer, even more so than constant danger or witnessing the death of others.

Grossman further argues that violence in television, movies and video games contributes to real-life violence by a similar process of training and desensitization.

As an interesting side note, LTC Mosby, right from the start, had all of his cavalry men get rid of their swords. He never used one himself.

It is interesting about the use of swords. I have read conflicting information about Forrest. I have read that he carried a sharpened 1842 heavy saber, saying "War means fightin' and fightin' means killin'. I also read that he called a saber a "rattling nuisance". Then there is a quote where he says "There is nary a saber in my command". I even read that Forrest was left handed and carried his saber on his right side, which was counter to U.S. regulations, at least. (I haven't seen Confederate regulations on the matter). It gets confusing. Did he, or didn't he?

Men Against Fire: How Many Soldiers Actually Fired Their Weapons at the Enemy During the Vietnam War

In a squad of 10 men, on average fewer than three ever fired their weapons in combat. Day in, day out — it did not matter how long they had been soldiers, how many months of combat they had seen, or even that the enemy was about to overrun their position. This was what the highly regarded Brigadier General Samuel Lyman Atwood Marshall, better known as S.L.A. Marshall, or 'Slam,' concluded in a series of military journal articles and in his book, Men Against Fire, about America's World War II soldiers. Marshall had been assigned as a military analyst for the U.S. Army in both the Pacific and Europe. The American, he concluded, comes 'from a civilization in which aggression, connected with the taking of life, is prohibited and unacceptable….The fear of aggression has been expressed to him so strongly and absorbed by him so deeply and pervadingly — practically with his mother's milk — that it is part of the normal man's emotional make-up. This is his great handicap when he enters combat. It stays his trigger finger even though he is hardly conscious that it is a restraint upon him.'

Marshall's claims did not go unchallenged, but despite the disagreements they were widely accepted as truth both within the nation's military and by those writing about the war and its American fighting force. Marshall continued in his role as analyst and self-proclaimed military historian before, during and after the Korean War, authoring many more books and frequently appearing as a guest lecturer at Fort Leavenworth and other installations around the United States. It is not an exaggeration to say that he was more or less a living legend by the mid-1960s. Largely due to his influence, noncommissioned officers and officers sent to Vietnam at the beginning of the American buildup were concerned that their soldiers and Marines would not fire at the enemy.

The American fighting man made sure that these concerns were short-lived. He showed little hesitation to use a rifle, pistol, shotgun, machine gun, grenade launcher or whatever other weapon he carried. Marshall himself visited Vietnam to conduct studies similar to those done during World War II and later emulated in Korea. He concluded that much had changed since those earlier conflicts and that it was not unusual for close to 100 percent of American infantrymen to engage the adversary during firefights in Vietnam. It seemed that all was well. Marshall had seemingly found that the Americans' hesitation to fire was all but gone.

Some 20 years later, the validity of Marshall's analysis was called into doubt. Respected researchers interviewed those who had accompanied him in World War II and also pored over his personal notes during the mid-1980s. Convincing evidence pointed to his having fabricated his World War II ratio-of-fire values, still so widely accepted at the time. The question seemed inevitable: Had there been a problem with Americans' willingness to engage the enemy in World War II? If so, had it actually been rectified during the Vietnam War as Marshall claimed, or was the research done there just as flawed as had been the case a quarter of a century before?

The concern was fundamental to the nation's military readiness. Americans would die needlessly and wars would be much extended if U.S. troops failed to perform the essential act of firing on the enemy. Compelled to determine whether a problem existed, I conducted a survey of 258 1st Cavalry Division Vietnam veterans in 1987. My motivation had nothing to do with determining Americans' willingness to use their weapons in World War II; any results from Vietnam would not apply to a war fought decades before. The question was whether there might be an existing problem in the U.S. armed forces. Despite Marshall's fall from grace, there were those who had agreed with him. The issue was important enough to investigate rigorously. Since Vietnam was the most recent U.S. war, its veterans were the men who could provide answers to critical questions addressing willingness to fire. Ultimately it was their responses that formed the basis for a detailed study of this issue and the influence of training, the 12-month rotation and the six-month command tour on the American fighting man's combat performance. The results of that study were published in 2000 in the book Reading Athena's Dance Card: Men Against Fire in Vietnam. This article summarizes those findings relating to whether men fired their weapons and what factors influenced their willingness to do so.

Only nine of the 1st Cavalry Division veterans reported that they never personally fired on the enemy, a far different result from what Marshall had written was the case in the Pacific and Europe. But some might suspect that a man would hesitate to admit his own shortcomings under fire. The veterans were therefore also asked to reflect on the performance of their comrades in arms. When asked what portion of their fellow soldiers fired during any given engagement, the veterans estimated that about 84 percent of a unit's men armed with individual weapons (rifles, pistols, grenade launchers, shotguns) and approximately 90 percent of those manning crew-served weapons (generally the M-60 machine gun) did so.

From these responses it seems that Americans in Vietnam had little hesitation to engage their enemy. Yet the observations of these veterans prompt the question of why, on average, nearly two of every 10 men were not firing when their unit was in contact. The apparent problem was not of the magnitude Marshall had reported for World War II, but losing the firepower of so many soldiers was still no small matter. In a unit with 500 riflemen, some 80 would not engage. Unlike the numbers from Marshall's work, these estimates came directly from the men who had fought in the cities, jungles, firebases and rice paddies of Vietnam. Why did so many not fire?

No single factor explains it. A man's duty position was one critical element. Soldiers surveyed in the 1st Cavalry Division can in general be said to have come from one of two basic groups. The primary job of the first group was to engage the enemy with small-arms fire. These men served as riflemen, machine-gunners, helicopter door gunners, vehicle crewmen or others who were to kill the adversary with the weapon they carried. The second basic group consisted of others who accompanied those of the first group. It included men who might sometimes fire on the adversary, but that was not their primary responsibility. These Marines and soldiers were squad leaders, first sergeants, platoon leaders and company commanders directing maneuvers, distributing ammunition, calling for fire or performing the many other tasks that success in a firefight demanded. They included assistant machine-gunners, whose first responsibilities were to load an M-60 and help the gunner to identify targets. Others were artillery forward observers who called for and directed artillery and aircraft fire; medics caring for the wounded; engineers destroying bunkers, removing mines or investigating tunnel complexes; chaplains; radio operators passing information; or pilots flying helicopters.

In the case of the second group, vital duties were left undone if on contact these men first raised rifle to shoulder or drew a pistol to engage. There were occasions when firing their weapons was essential, but many times their choice to engage rather than perform their other duties would have done more harm than good. Lieutenant General Harold Moore recalled what his responsibilities as commander of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, demanded of him in his classic book We Were Soldiers Once… and Young. Moore noted that he was tempted by the opportunity to join his riflemen in firing on the enemy during fighting at LZ X-Ray in 1965, but he 'resisted the temptation. I had no business getting involved with the actions of only one company. I might get pinned down and become simply another rifleman. My duty was to lead riflemen.' For a very different reason, chaplains rarely engaged the enemy. Regulations proscribed men in those positions from carrying weapons, though some felt compelled to do so in a war in which medics and chaplains, who were not legitimate targets under accepted rules of war, were shot and killed nonetheless.

But even the men whose primary job was to engage the enemy found that at times they could not fire. Location was a second factor that determined whether a man pulled, or should have pulled, the trigger of his weapon. A soldier at the tail of a column winding through the dense foliage of a Southeast Asian jungle might hear an engagement to his front, yet be unable to see where his comrades were located. If he fired, he risked shooting his own men. That same infantryman might later be on the perimeter of a defensive position when the enemy attacked the other side of his firebase. Sluing his weapon around in the dark and firing meant those bullets could strike other defenders in the back.

And it should be no surprise that at times fear kept men from firing. Although the habitual coward was rare, 80 percent of those explaining why a fellow soldier did not fire cited fear as one of the causes. Yet these respondents noted at the same time that fear was generally a passing condition; a man not engaging on one occasion could be expected to use his weapon later in the same engagement, or during subsequent battles. Sometimes what appeared to be fear was really common sense, based on an accurate assessment of the situation. A man could be pinned down by heavy and accurate incoming fire. Given that everybody in a unit rarely faced such focused attention, men would wait until the enemy pointed their weapons elsewhere before engaging. One veteran recalled situations when 'many soldiers don't return fire because they are behind a tree or log under heavy suppressive fire. Once artillery or other units create a distraction of fire with the enemy, these same soldiers will return fire with relish.' Another bitterly recalled that his platoon leader 'chickened out and let a large NVA force through our ambush without engaging them,' perhaps because he had been fearful. Then again, perhaps it was good judgment on the part of an experienced lieutenant. It was not unusual for an ambush party to let the enemy pass because the Americans were so greatly outnumbered that engaging would have led to disaster. Several veterans recalled that they had been on ambushes where they did not spring the trap for just such a reason.

Level of personal experience could be linked to how scared a man was. New men were too frequently overwhelmed by the sudden roar of a contact, the flying debris of dust, leaves and wood. Even experienced men could find such situations difficult; they were potentially terrifying when first encountered. The consequence of a replacement's failure to respond could sometimes mean the new man's death. A 1st Cavalry Division veteran recalled one recent arrival who lost his life 'because he was apparently looking for a foxhole with a concrete lining. As he was dying, he kept saying, `I couldn't find a hole.' He was hit about 10 to 15 seconds after we received the first shots and was standing up looking confused. He didn't respond to the `get down' yells by other troops.' Another soldier concluded that when someone failed to fire, it 'was usually during their first firefight experience and was mainly due to fear or the unsure feeling of how to respond.' A third admitted that this was undoubtedly the case for at least one rifleman: himself. He wrote that he did not fire in one of his first encounters with the enemy due to fear, adding, 'I am ashamed to admit this.' Not firing on one or two occasions did not mean the same man's response would not be far different during a subsequent event, however. And in fact fear could also have just the opposite effect, as was the case with a veteran who recalled that he was 'too damned scared to do anything else than shoot and hope I did not get shot.'

Weapons malfunctions sometimes kept a man from engaging even if he wanted to — as did unfamiliarity with a weapon. Controversy regarding the M-16 rifle and its variants developed soon after it was designated as the rifleman's primary weapon in the theater. Many veteran respondents remained bitter about what they perceived to be a failure to properly train them during the transition from the M-14 to the newer rifle. A considerable number recalled how the weapon they used during basic and advanced individual training was the older M-14, but that the M-16 was issued on their arrival in Vietnam. Too often these men received inadequate training on the unfamiliar rifle before they were committed to active operations. Others are equally passionate about the M-16's alleged mechanical unreliability. Whether he carried an M-16 or some other weapon, a soldier was fortunate if a rapid reaction drill corrected the problem. If not, a replacement weapon had to be found either during or after the firefight. In either case, the warrior was under fire with no means to engage his attackers.

The assigned mission at times meant that actions other than killing the enemy had a higher priority. Units on intelligence collection operations frequently let a threat pass by unmolested. The members of these patrols sometimes called for artillery to engage the targets after they passed; in other instances, the Americans simply reported what they had seen. Firing their weapons risked compromising a patrol's position, whereas resisting the temptation could provide the information-collectors with several more days of unmolested activity. Given the difficulty of inserting a patrol in many instances, preserving secrecy could easily outweigh the immediate benefit of a few enemy taken under fire.

Similarly, good tactics at times meant that a soldier did not use his primary weapon, if he engaged at all. Experienced units often shifted some if not all of their men just before or after darkness fell so that the NVA or VC could not mark American locations for attack later that night. Enemy sappers routinely made post-sunset attempts to determine the location of U.S. perimeter defensive positions. They sought to cause the Americans to fire so that muzzle flashes would give the defenders' positions away. Determining the location of heavy weapons such as machine guns was especially desirable; those were primary targets during any attack because of their greater killing potential. Men in well-trained units knew when to detonate a Claymore mine, call for mortar or artillery support, or throw a grenade instead of using a rifle, pistol, machine gun or grenade launcher. These alternatives were means of dealing with a threat without compromising firing positions.

Personal beliefs did play a role, though a far less pervasive one than Marshall claimed was the case during World War II. Conscientious objectors accompanied infantry units into combat as medics, ammunition bearers for machine guns, or in other noncombatant roles. They often put themselves at greater risk by not carrying weapons. If the 1st Cavalry Division respondents reflect the majority veteran view, such men generally performed their duties well and were often respected for their convictions. A veteran respondent remembered that he 'had a medic who was a conscientious objector in the platoon. He chose not to carry a weapon during his tour. When asked if he would fire a weapon if our platoon was being overrun and some of his buddies might die if he did not, his answer was that he `would not fire a weapon.' He was still respected for his deep conviction against weapons.'

A unit could be in a no-fire zone, an area in which using weapons was prohibited. Poor training that improperly prepared soldiers for combat underlay other cases of failing to engage. In at least one instance a man turned to point out an enemy soldier rather than firing as he should have. Finally, one veteran recalled his simply being outgunned as he stood 'naked on top of a shower stall put-ting water in. I threw the water can at the enemy, but the round fell way short.'

The list is not exhaustive, but it helps to explain why a unit might have several men not engaging despite being under fire. Often every man fired during a contact; at other times, only a few had the opportunity. And there were occasions when fear, cowardice, poor judgment or confusion kept men from employing weapons against their foes when they should have. However, such occasions were the exception in Vietnam.

It is evident that the vast majority of those whose duties put them in harm's way fired when the situation dictated they should do so. But what factors influenced how many times a man had the opportunity to engage the enemy during his time in Southeast Asia? Were there factors that made it more likely for some men to fire than others? We already know that duty position had such an effect, but the likelihood that someone engaged varied even among those whose primary job was to shoot to kill. More than a third of the 1st Cavalry Division veterans fired on the NVA or VC less than 15 times while in-country. Nearly 80 percent engaged 50 or fewer times. Members of one group in particular, however, consistently saw much more action: aviators and their door gunners. Enlisted men, warrant officers and commissioned officers who flew or crewed aircraft tended to have considerably more engagements on average. A third of this group engaged the enemy more than 100 times; fewer than half fired on the enemy less than 50 times.

Besides influencing whether and how often a man fired, duty position also greatly affected his chances of coming home alive. On average, two 1st Cavalry Division soldiers awoke to their last sunrise every day of the 612 years the unit was in Vietnam. Riflemen, door gunners and others who served at the cutting edge, men like the vast majority of those who took my survey, were of course more likely to suffer wounds than others in less exposed specialties.

Climate was another element that made a given day more or less likely to involve enemy contact. The northern part of South Vietnam normally had its rainy season from September to January, the southern part from May to September. That meant enemy infiltration routes were difficult to travel during all but the February-to-May period. Not surprisingly, American units (and the French before them) suffered their largest numbers of casualties during these late winter and spring months.

Likewise, men quickly learned where the chances of enemy contact were greater. That was true locally, in that a given village or region habitually had more contacts than did others in the vicinity. It was also true at the province level. Three of South Vietnam's provinces (Quang Tri, Quang Nam and Thua Thien) accounted for more than 40 percent of American casualties. More than three-quarters of U.S. servicemen were killed in action in just 10 of the country's more than 40 provinces.

Time likewise played its part. Although it was not evident until after the war, 1968 was undeniably the year in which the chances of being killed were greatest. It was the only year during the U.S. participation in the conflict in which more than 10,000 Americans lost their lives. For every 1,000 Americans in Vietnam in 1968, 28 died, a higher ratio than in any other year.

Time influenced fatalities in another way, too. The amount of combat experience played a dominating role in the likelihood a man survived. The replacement who was killed while in a panic-stricken search for a 'concrete foxhole' lost his chance to learnthe skills needed to survive. Veterans repeatedly cited how vulnerable the new man was until he had a chance to learn the ropes after arriving in the combat theater. The chances that a man would die during his first three months in Vietnam were virtually equal to those for the last nine months of his tour combined. The likelihood that a man survived to return home alive dramatically increased if he lived long enough to discover the lessons of war.

A nation sending its youth to war must prepare them well if those individuals are to survive the experience. Veterans who responded to the survey regarding their months at war passed on many thoughts regarding their performance, expectations, weapons, training, the 12-month tour of duty and the six-month command tour. The lessons of Vietnam are there for those willing to learn.

To understand the nature of aggression and violence on the battlefield, it must first be recognized that most participants in close combat are literally "frightened out of their wits." Once the bullets start flying, most combatants stop thinking with the forebrain (that portion of the brain that makes us human) and start thinking with the midbrain (the primitive portion of our brain, which is indistinguishable from that of an animal).

In conflict situations, this primitive, midbrain processing can be observed in the existence of a powerful resistance to killing one's own kind. Animals with antlers and horns slam together in a relatively harmless head-to-head fashion, and piranha fish fight their own kind with flicks of the tail, but against any other species these creatures unleash their horns and teeth without restraint. This is an essential survival mechanism that prevents a species from destroying itself during territorial and mating rituals.

One major modern revelation in the field of military psychology is the observation that such resistance to killing one's own species is also a key factor in human combat. *Brig. Gen. S. L. A. Marshall first observed this during his work as an official U.S. Army historian in the Pacific and European theaters of operations in World War II. Based on his post-combat interviews, Marshall concluded in his book Men Against Fire(1946, 1978) that only 15 to 20 percent of the individual riflemen in World War II fired their own weapons at an exposed enemy soldier. Key weapons, such as *flame-throwers, were usually fired. Crew-served weapons, such as *machine guns, almost always were fired. And action would increase greatly if a nearby leader demanded that the soldier fire. But when left on their own, the great majority of individual combatants appear to have been unable or unwilling to kill.

Marshall's findings were and have remained controversial. Faced with scholarly concern about a researcher's methodology and conclusions, the scientific method involves replicating the research. In Marshall's case, every available parallel, scholarly study validates his basic findings. One of these studies was Ardant du Picq's survey of French officers in the Korean War when the rate of psychiatric casualties was almost seven times higher than the average for World War II. Only after the war settled down, lines stabilized, and the threat of having enemy in rear areas decreased did the average rate go down to that of World War II. Again, just the potential for close-up, inescapable, interpersonal confrontation is more effective and has greater impact on human behavior than the actual presence of inescapable, impersonal death and destruction.

Ardant du Picq's surveys of French officers in the 1860s and his observations about ancient battles (Battle Studies, 1946), John Keegan and Richard Holmes' numerous accounts of ineffectual firing throughout history (Soldiers, 1985), Holmes' assessment of Argentine firing rates in the Falklands War (Acts of War, 1985), Paddy Griffith's data on the extraordinarily low firing rate among Napoleonic and American *Civil War regiments (Battle Tactics of the American Civil War, 1989), the British army's laser reenactments of historical battles, the FBI's studies of nonfiring rates among law enforcement officers in the 1950s and 1960s, and countless other individual and anecdotal observations, all confirm Marshall's fundamental conclusion that human beings are not, by nature, killers. Indeed, from a psychological perspective, the history of warfare can be viewed as a series of successively more effective tactical and mechanical mechanisms to enable or force combatants to overcome their resistance to killing other human beings, even when defined as the enemy.

By 1946, the US Army had accepted Marshall's conclusions, and the Human Resources Research Office of the US Army subsequently pioneered a revolution in combat training, which eventually replaced firing at targets with deeply ingrained conditioning, using realistic, man-shaped pop-up targets that fall when hit. Psychologists assert that this kind of powerful operant conditioning is the only technique that will reliably influence the primitive, midbrain processing of a frightened human being. Fire drills condition schoolchildren to respond properly even when terrified during a fire. Conditioning in flight simulators enables pilots to respond reflexively to emergency situations even when frightened. And similar application and perfection of basic conditioning techniques increased the rate of fire to approximately 55 percent in Korea and around 95 percent in Vietnam.

Equally high rates of fire resulting from modern conditioning techniques can be seen in Holmes' observation of British firing rates in the Falklands and FBI data on law enforcement firing rates since the nationwide introduction of modern conditioning techniques in the late 1960s.

The extraordinarily high firing rate resulting from these processes was a key factor in the American ability to claim that the United States never lost a major engagement in Vietnam. But conditioning that overrides such a powerful, innate resistance has enormous potential for psychological backlash. Every warrior society has a "purification ritual" to help the returning warrior deal with his "blood guilt" and to reassure him that what he did in combat was "good." In primitive tribes, this generally involves ritual bathing, ritual separation (which serves as a cooling-off and "group therapy" session), and a ceremony embracing the veteran back into the tribe. Modern Western rituals traditionally involve long separation while marching or sailing home, parades, monuments, and unconditional acceptance from society and family.

In the *Vietnam War, this purification ritual was turned on its head. The returning American veteran was attacked and condemned in an unprecedented manner. The traditional horrors of combat were magnified by modern conditioning techniques, and this combined with societal condemnation to create a circumstance that resulted in 0.5 to 1.5 million cases of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Vietnam veterans. The mass incidence of psychiatric disorders among Vietnam veterans resulted in the "discovery" of PTSD, a condition that we now know traditionally occurred as a result of warfare, but never in such quantity.

PTSD seldom results in violent criminal acts, and upon returning to society, the recipient of modern military conditioning is statistically no more likely to engage in violent crime than a nonveteran of the same age. The key safeguard in this process appears to be the deeply ingrained discipline that the combat soldier internalizes with his military training. However, with the advent of interactive "point-and-shoot" arcade and video games, there is significant concern that society is aping military conditioning, but without the vital safeguard of discipline. There is strong evidence to indicate that the indiscriminate civilian application of combat conditioning techniques as entertainment may be a factor in worldwide, skyrocketing violent crime rates, including a sevenfold increase in per capita aggravated assaults in America since 1956. Thus, the latest chapter in American military history may be occurring in the city streets.

During the French and Indian War William Howe initiated the idea of Light Infantry for the Regular Army. Part of that training called for the light infantry to practice shooting at "marks". Just before the revolution that kind of training was extended to all the ranks, "hat men" and grenadiers included and even the (not yet Royal) marines. An excellent book. now considered among the best for documenting the role of the British regular army in our revolution, is the Mathew H. Spring book, "With Zeal and with Bayonets Only" published in 2008. Despite the title, the book well documents the growing reliance of the British Army to instruct its troops in how to take aim before firing. On pages 207-to 209 he cites contemporary primary sources demonstrating that by the American Revolution it was standard practice to give the troops, again including the marines, "frequent target shooting", the men should be "taught to take good aim". The Osprey Campaign publication, Philadelphia, 1777, (2007) points out the British Army was so impressed with the idea of accurate shooting that they not only set up Ferguson's light infantry company in 1777 but the year before had begun to produce their own rifle and began issuing it to light infantry, the model 1776 light infantry rifle (page 30). Despite the common belief that the Napoleonic Baker rifle was the first attempt by the British to develop a rifle for light company use they were already doing it in the first years of the revolution. The British did continue to believe in the desirability of rapid platoon firing but they wanted their infantry to now aim their muskets before that firing. Aiming was no longer regarded with horror but had become standard practice.

How much marksmanship training were Civil War recruits given? How much target practice were experienced Civil War soldiers given during periods of non campaigning?
 
To those posting articles on the willingness of Americans to engage the enemy, I can only add some anecdotal evidence from my time spent among Vietnam vets (I was in the Army (Infantry) while they were still getting their 20). I heard on more than one occasion that Americans were, "slow to get started" in the killing factory that is war. But, once adapted to it, there were no more vicious troops in the world. I won't share any stories, because they aren't mine, but based on the ones I've heard, I won't disagree with the assessment. The problem with the surveys cited is they don't span the length of the war. I think you can get a sense of this change over time reading Audie Murphy's book "To Hell and Back." I don't think it comes across as well in the movie. Veteran troops are more lethal for more reasons than just being used to being under fire.
 
I would think aiming to wound would be doubtful. Even modern soldiers are trained to aim center mass.

I think objectives of the war changed greatly as the war went on and became more violent. The Anaconda PLan was basically to starve the South and make them say UNCLE. As a little time went on it was understood that this would never work. When Sherman gave his estimate of soldiers which would be needed to end the rebellion, he was called insane. If anything his estimates were low. The prospects early on were that the war was being pushed by a minorirty of hardcore rebels and the south would come to its senses. That was the hope early on. Its sometimes said the Union fought with 1 arm behind its back. Whether that is true or not it has been said many times. I dont think these are necessarily the actions of people hell bent on killing. I think the parole system and the quality of prisons changed drastically for similar reasons, although the parole issue is a complicated one.
 
I don't think speculation is necessary. There's enough primary sources that, if this happened on any sort of meaningful basis, we'd know about it. Also, when a large percentage of the wounded would die from their wounds, is there a meaningful distinction between the intentions?

So 1st Bull Run, the South had 387 KIA and 1582 wounded. Did all those wounded die from their wounds?
 
I respect your right to have a question. I don't see how we could establish an objective metric to prove or disprove your hypothesis. Perhaps a poster skilled in scientific studies could do so and still take account of all the variables already mentioned.
Here's how I look at it. lets look at documented police shootings which are at much closer range and the police officer is almost never as cold, hot hungry diseased ridden or fatigued as the average CW soldier on either side.
I can only hope that all persons who carry a handgun for a living i.e myself think about the following study commissioned by the New York City Police Dept. I think it is relevant to the discussion to show that it is very difficult at best to have the time to determine just where one's rounds go in a combat situation.

Starting through 1969 and published in 1981 the NYPD studied 6,00 shooting from Sept 1854 to December 1979 in which 254 police officers where killed it did not mention wounded.
Hit potential the following figures show at what percentage the suspect was shot at what range.
0 to 3 yards 38%
3 to 7 yards 11.5%
7 to 15 yards 9.44%
overall 90% of shootings where under 15 feet.
70% of the NYPD officers involved in the study did not use their sights 10% did not know if they did or not.
In a 1992 NYPD study the hit potential was worse.
Less then 3 yards 28%
3 to seven yards 11%
7 to 15 yards 4.2 %
Keep in mind for most of these years NYPD officers where far better trained then CW soldiers in marksmanship and the vast majority of NYPD officers had served in the US or other millitaries and many of those where and still very much so are combat veterans in the US and or other millitaries . Yet they only hit the suspect 17% of the time. I just don't see a CW soldier having the time and ability to choose just where his rounds will hit.

P.S> Amazingly enough the NYPD was able to hit 10 suspects for every officer shot . The average amount of rounds expended was 2 too 3 vs a Los Angeles Police study( 1967) that showed it was 2.6 rounds expended. NYC encompass a wide range of topography ranging from crowded urban areas to suburban areas to beach's and large parks.

I dont see how the material you pasted on the NYPD has any bearing on this. I tried opening the link in two different browsers and could not do so in either. I thought maybe I was missing something, that there was more to the article. The police and the ACW? I tell you what. The reason there is probably no data on police woundings is that if you shot at them, they are in all likelihood going to kill you. If they shot at you and missed, did they escape or get captured? Who were these people the police shot at? Were they armed? There is no comparison between weaponry although I would imagine there were some pretty good marksmen in the ACW....many men fed their families with their rifle and were taught to shoot from an early age. I dont see this bares on the OP. .....I guess that aim is not accurate between humans - regardless of circumstance.
 
At the beginning of the war many Confederates were armed with smooth bore muskets. The idea that men with such in line of battle could intentionally put a ball anywhere but vaguely "down range" is a fantasy. The federals, and later the the Confederates also, were better armed with rifled muskets. They had greater range and better accuracy. A diarist in the Stonewall Brigade tells of the situation around Washington after First Manassas. The two armies had made their entrenchments and the pickets would snipe at each other. Or, as it turned out, the federals would snipe at the Confederates and laugh as the Confederate return fire fell harmlessly short. Until the Confederates managed capture a few federals with their arms. They then began picking off the federals in their works. This was not in line of battle though.

In reading several diaries now, I've not found an account where the diarist expressed any desire to not kill the enemy. Their descriptions of firing in battle were mostly loading and firing as quickly as possible. There were some descriptions of the difficulties of locating the enemy on the battlefield. But mostly not. Usually they were close enough to see the enemy's eyes. Probably 50-100 yards. Early in the war (as late a Second Manassas or Sharpsburg) when both sides were in line of battle and not behind works, it was volley fire, toe to toe slug fest. As a practical matter, I don't think there could have been much attempting to "place" rounds. First of all, you are shooting off-hand standing. Second, you have an unwieldy, in length, musket that may have a bayonet attached. Third, and most important, you have balls whizzing past you like bees (not to mention your mess mates dropping around you). You may or may not "intend" to shoot the enemy at one or another parts of his anatomy, but your success at doing so in those conditions would be next to zero.

As for the bayonet, LTG John B. Gordon makes a point of saying in his book that they were almost never employed be either side. The bayonet was used more for psychological effect than practical use. On the defense, it told the men that they were expected to stay there and not retreat (it also conveyed that message to the enemy). On the offense, it conveys resolution to the attack. But, in final analysis, they used their rifles as clubs much more than spears. As an interesting side note, LTC Mosby, right from the start, had all of his cavalry men get rid of their swords. He never used one himself. All of his troops carried two Colt revolvers. Many times they took advantage of the superior firepower resulting from that choice.

Not much at all, but the stereotype of the British soldier from the Revolution was that he was not taught to aim at all, just point in the general direction (which was probably what most soldiers in battle wound up doing, anyway, until recently). There is plain evidence to the contrary showing that by the time of the Revolution, Redcoats were commonly being taught to aim and were taking target practice as part of their training. This is NOT how British soldiers are usually presented in our history books. The subject of aiming their weapons does not usually come up in the average book on the Civil War soldier at all. Interestingly, if one looks at the battlefield statistics of Eighteenth Century warfare, particularly on the battlefields of Europe, as a percentage of the men engaged, those battles were about as lethal as those of our Civil War.

I thought I explained how indeed the material does have bearing. At very close range with a weapon that easily hit center of mass at 15 feet and under with training, without being hungry or tired from a 20 plus mile march with a heavy pack , trained police officers have a less the one out of 5 chances of hitting a man at 15 feet or less. It does not seem plausible that a CW soldier is actually going to have the luxery of time to aim to wound rather then kill under even harsher combat situations then a police officer.

Tactically, wounding is more effective in the respect that the wounded soldier is out of the battle, and generally a comrade to assist is also now a non-combatant. Thereby a wounding has capability to remove not one, but two (or possibly more) combatants from actively firing back at the opposition. However it's much more difficult to purposely administer.... My $.02 worth.

I'm sure there were some who fired into the air on purpose but I'd guess that number was very small. I just can't see many who, at least after a little time in service, being willing to stand in a line and willingly miss while the enemy is trying to kill you and your comrades. Desertion would probably be a better tactic. As many have noted I think the average soldier just fired in the general direction of the enemy and hoped they survived another day.

As to purposely wounding I really don't think that would be doable because of reduced visibility, poor sites, lack of skill, inaccuracy of many weapons of the day (esp. smoothbores), and the fact that even limb wounds could easily be fatal. The last would certainly be true in the CW due to the often long delay between being wounded and receiving any real treatment.

And where would you shoot someone with a .58 caliber weapon so as to only wound them even if miraculously you could place such a shot ? As an ex-EMT/fireman I can testify that one can indeed die from a badly-damaged femur (two units of blood lost in just most simple fractures of that bone) and that there are major vessels in all the limbs that can cause one to bleed out in minutes if severed. So, no, if you shoot somebody anywhere there's still a good possibility that you can kill them.
 
Then again, there were instances such as at the Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania, Franklin, the Dead Angle at Kennesaw Mountain, etc. where both sides were largely fighting over fortifications and were only separated by the mound of dirt in between them. In that situation men were firing into each other's faces over and under the head logs atop the works. There are numerous accounts from those battles in which participants speak of shooting the enemy at close range; in that case it was often kill or be killed.

True enough about one wounded man takes out one to four non wounded men (depending where the soldier was hit) to tote him off the battle field. In the CW context an infantryman with a rifle be it smooth bore or rifled is just lucky to hit any part of his enemy. A sniper of course has the luxury of picking and choosing his shots.
