In my first two books there is a peripheral character that is involved in the underground railroad. Henry lives in a rural area outside Nashville and has a wife and three small kids, though is gone a lot with his abolition work. His identity as an abolitionist is carefully guarded.
I am not sure if there will be a third book and can't think about that right now but am tossing a few ideas around in my head in case I venture back into the writing room. I have been considering Henry and curious about what his motivations would be and thinking perhaps he would have an interesting story. Did people risk their lives and liberty because of religious conviction, altruism or something else? What makes it progress from sympathy to action and disobeying the law? People are usually complicated, sometimes conflicted, but when you strip off all the exterior layers of personality the true self is often surprising, even to the person themself. I was wondering if anyone here knew any interesting abolitionist stories, more about the abolitionist than what they accomplished? Hopefully someone a little more normal than Parson Brownlow.
