I hope someone can tell me what the abbreviation AD means on a Civil War record in the column beside each battle on the soldier's record. On several there is the letter P, which I presume means present. But after several it has what appears to be A D.

My guess would be "Absent, Detailed"

Thanks. Someone once told me it meant absent on duty, meaning they had been sent somewhere by commanding officer.

You beat me to it. I just enlarged and read it. AD = "Absent on detail or duty by order."
