For the most part, two infantry tactics manuals influenced the War of Secession: Hardee's Rifle and Light Infantry Tactics and Casey's Infantry Tactics. The former was used by Confederate and Union troops, while the latter was used only the Union.

I wanted to have a thread discussing the similarities and differences between the two manuals, and maybe trying to figure out which was better in the context of mid-19th century line battles.

As a battle of Chickamauga fan, I'd say I think Casey's double-line tactics were used to good effect.

Although I am aware of the use of these two infantry manuals, my knowledge of the tactics enumerated in the manuals, including similarities and differences, is sadly deficient. So I am looking forward to any posts that can add to my knowledge.
