Especially in the Shenandoah Valley, there were many miscellaneous towns that a disliked or convalescing Confederate officer were assigned as commandant. I am still trying to find others, but these are those that I can find:
1864:
- Charlottesville, Va.: Brig. Gen. Francis R. T. Nicholls
1865:
- Danville, Va.: Brig. Gen. Henry H. Walker
- Danville Prison, Va.: Col. Robert E. Withers (18th Va.)
- Lynchburg, Va.: Brig. Gen. Raleigh E. Colston
- Staunton, Va.: Brig. Gen. Robert D. Lilley
I am always interested in finding these, as often these are where miscellaneous Confederate reserve troops and others disappear out of the records. The 3rd Va. Reserves, for example, was at Danville.
Any others you can find? Post commanders in the other Confederate states are pretty well-documented, especially in Alabama and Mississippi.
