In the Civil War independent commands existed from the company level right on up to Army Corps level. My ancestor enlisted in the Union Army as a member of Schooley's Independent Battery. Later the battery was attached to the Second Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery as Company M and the unit reported to the regimental commander. My question is what about independent commands at the company level that did not become attached. Who did they report to? Was there a formal structure for this?
