Inability to Compromise

We all know that the primary cause of the Civil War was the issue of slavery. No matter what issue you bring up, it traces back to slavery. We get this.

Earlier today, General Kelly, the White House Chief of Staff said that the cause of the Civil War was an inability to compromise. My own research has shown that this is a true statement in its proper context. Lincoln fought the war at the beginning to preserve the Union. He himself has said he was willing to accept the existence of slavery where it already existed. He was against an expansion of it. Politicians in Washington tried to find a compromise, but the abolitionists in the North and the "defending God's One True Christian Nation" in the South made compromise pretty much impossible. But Gen. Kelly is taking a lot of heat by people whose sole focus is slavery. Question - what say you all? Is the General right? Are his critics right? Discussion?
