Maine parted ways with Massachusetts (a process that began in 1786): in 1816 a popular vote on secession met the Massachusetts requirement of a 5-to-4 popular vote and, in 1819 applied for statehood. Statehood was opposed by the slave states because admission would upset the delicate balance between free and slave states; however, a compromise was reached that would admit Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state.
Like most compromises, it pleased neither side. Many Mainers objected because they believed that entering the union under this arrangement implied their agreement with slavery; William King was hard pressed to convince them otherwise. He was able to do so and today, March 15, 1820, Maine became the 23rd state.
Happy Birthday, Maine!
