Illinois black codes

Racism in some northern states ran deep, we dont hear about it all that much. Some may find it quite surprising.

"Black history in Illinois is rather grim due to the Black Codes initiated in the middle 1800s. The codes extended a complete prohibition against black immigration into the state. The elimination of legal slavery did not mean the end of these Black Codes.
Prior to the codes, a law was passed in 1829 requiring free blacks to register in the county seat and post a $1,000 bond to cover costs should they become indigent or violate state or local laws. They usually had to find a white man to act as surety for them. They also had to register their certificates of freedom from the state from which they immigrated."
