I picked up this 1835 us marked Springfield smoothbore as a chunk of rust. It's now my new favorite wall hanger. The lock is strong and everything is tight which surprised me. It's been shortened and sights removed to I dare say a coach gun length. I like to imagine that some old timer converted it to a home defense shotgun like I have in my bathroom (cause I ain't going out like that). I could probably shoot it if I wanted to. (Probably won't). There are pieces that I wish could tell their story and this is one of them.

It has a cone-in-barrel conversion to percussion, so probably done at an arsenal. I think a number of these were condemned and sold off before the war. It could have been turned into a civilian shotgun. Then the war came! The guy who owned it had a horse so he joined the cavalry but he didn't have a carbine! So he grabbed a hacksaw and instant carbine! Or something else might have happened. A lot of these that were turned into shotguns had the forestock removed and a long barrel. It seems to me that cut-down muskets like this were not a common civilian adaptation, but then I don't have that much background or experience with firearms.

You store a shotgun next to you while on the Crapper? Let me guess you saw that episode of GAME OF THRONES where the midget Son kills his Father with a crossbow while he's taking a dump. Well just treat your Kids good and you should have no worries.
