Good Morning All, Happy Friday!,
Anyway, I'm trying to find a good source for identifying bullets. I'm sure this has been asked a millions times. I have searched old posts but no luck. I'm probably not using the search correctly. ANY help would be appreciated. Thanks for being so patient with me!

I'm new here, but I do collect bullets so I'll give you some recommendations:

McKee and Mason's Civil War Projectiles II: Small Arms and Field Artillery with Supplement (I believe the last reprint was in 1995)

For a more comprehensive/up to date reference series, check out Round Ball to Rimfire Volumes 1-4 by Dean S. Thomas. These books are pretty awesome.

Thomas also published a general reference book called A Handbook of Civil War Bullets and Cartridges which is far cheaper and more than likely more obtainable than the other ones that I've listed above.

I hope that helps

Im not sure where I got this (probably a Metal detecting site), might be of help to you....

Yes, believe that the mentioned work by McKee & Mason is the traditional reference source on this subject.

Agree too, that 'A Handbook of Civil War Bullets & Cartridges' by James Thomas & Dean Thomas is relatively inexpensive, convenient to use and more readily available than the other one. The end of this book also cross-references specimens listed therein to relevant pages in the McKee & Mason work.

The books by Dean Thomas, Round Ball to Rimfire, 4 volumes, are excellent with good pictures and corresponding information on bullets. Unfortunately they are expensive. They are up to date and have a number of bullets not listed or identified in M & M. Perhaps you can borrow them or find used copies. As you continue to collect try to cultivate friendly relationships with knowledgeable people. I have been lucky in this regard. I have also been helped by the fine fellows and ladies in this forum.

That sounds like a great source! I'll defiantly look into this, thank you !!!!!!
