I want a CANNON!

Good afternoon!

This is my first post here on your forum! For the last 17 years I've been interested in the civil war things.

I live about 45 minutes south of Shiloh battle field and have toured the museum and field quite a bit....unfortunately I've never quite been into all the details until now (I guess the but has bitten me!).

I have never fired a cannon, but I would love to have one! I would prefer an original barrel so I could actually own a piece of history, but I also want to fire this thing!!!

I'm torn between a reproduction and an original.

I know I will most likely spend at least 10k on one of these units but that's fine. Just looking for more experience....comments and critiques.

What kind of gun do you want?.....I've seen lower-quality used 10 pound Parrotts and 3 inch Ordnance replicas go for between 12,000 and 14,000....this includes the carriage.

If you are being serious, then you are looking at 12 to 14K for a repro. If you want an original, then when and if you can find one, you are looking at 40 to 50K and up for U.S. tubes, depending on type. Confederate, if one was to become available (extremely rare) are well over 100,000.

And yes, I'm dead serious. I have found that a original will be well out of my price range (maybe ). I'm guessing I need to start with a reproduction anyway...who want's to ruin a piece of history (or 50K..). I live on a secluded 600 acre lot so I'll be firing as much as time and 'powder money' allow.

If your budget ever permits you can purchase an original and have a new steel sleeve inserted which will permit you to safely fire it.

I envy you. I, too, would love to have a cannon or an ordnance rifle and a limber and all the "stuff". Unfortunately, I don't have any place to keep such or shoot, own no horses, and don't have enough budget. I've been #4 at a couple of demos but that's as close as I've got. I'd like to fire one with the full charge using shell, case, and canister rounds. The demos are actually pretty lame. I want to blow something up.

I got to pull the lanyard on a mountain howitzer at Fort Abercrombie last year as part of demo. I'd do it again in a heartbeat if the opportunity arose in the future! Go Tacoma go! By the way, any chance of an invite out your way to do a battle on your 600 acres? I think that one would be hard to turn down.

I was getting ready to post some info on the 1863 Roby Cav sword with 3 line markings and saw this and had to reply. One of my AGCA buddies just bought this one from. This cannon was one of the ones cast for firing when they cranked up the furnace at Tannahill Iron Works back in the 80's. The original owner had the carraige made from lamenated pine and you can see the result of leaving trail in the dirt. He has commissioned me to build a new carriage for him out of oak as the original were and I'm trying o find an old piece of oak 68 x 12 x 14 to get started. I found the original plans so I'm looking forward doing this one. Like you he wanted one but to but an original for 40k plus and then shoot it is madness. Hope you find what your looking for.
