I need a gun expert.

It is the cover for my book so I thought that would be considered spam. I wanted to make sure the gun in the picture was from the Civil War era and found out it was. So, nothing to see here...

I will roger that, and some of us now have our couriousity peaked.

*curiosity piqued*

Used in a sentence:

Why would you have your curiosity piqued by a book with cover art about which the author is unsure what it is? Sounds like we should be glad not to be subjected to seeing it. Any dum-dum can write a book and this proves it.

:nah disagree: That was rather rude and quite uncalled for , sir.

Really?
I'm assuming you are a friend of Mrs. Blackburn and this is good natured ribbing?

If you would not be forgotten, either write things worth reading, or do things worth the writing." ~ B. Franklin

Yes, that comment concerning what the intial question in this post suggests about the relative merits of the work reads rather harsh. I must apologize for that, but only to the person to whom it was directed.

America has never forgotten Benjamin Franklin because he did both. And he signed his name to his work. Those who are too cowardly to sign their own name to their posts really limit or have no credibility.

With all due respect, weigh in if you have either written things worth reading or done things worth writing about and sign your own name to them. The harsh facts of writing and publishing are that if you are going to endeavor to tread the same path as those who have done both, better know what you are talking about and have a thick skin to boot.

Benjamin Franklin also said, "Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment."

You also know that Franklin often used a pen name, right?

But, if I recall correctly, was when he was a publishing a paper and since he could not afford to hire reporters, he wrote most of the articles but used different "pen names" to make it appear he had a larger group of writers working for his paper.

I know this much about book publishing from personal experience with it over the years... legitimate, bona-fide professional writers don't publish 'moonlight and magnolias' fiction through a vanity press and ask people on an internet talk forum to identify a weapon for the cover art, then come up with some weak excuse about spam for not posting it because it exposes their lack of knowledge, etc. Historical fiction published via a vanity press is mostly, putting it as politely as I can, rubbish. You don't have to be Benjamin Franklin to know that much.

I find there is more than enough fiction in the accepted mythology that has passed as historical research of the past fifty years. If you are going to write something worth reading, clear some of that **** up. Maybe this is all off base, and this book will be another "Gone With The Wind." But I wouldn't bet on it. This is my last post on the subject, and I will wait to hear from the "author" herself to tell me (privately if she prefers) where this is all wrong or I'm missing something. I bet I don't hear a peep...

Writing fiction set in the civil war doesn't mean one had to be an expert in every aspect of the time period. Writers research things they don't know if they want to use it in their work. Seems odd to make snide comments about someone trying to find out information simply for cover art.

I think Craig's comment came partly because of the structure of the request. It seemed somewhat in the form of:

1 - 'Can you help?'
2 - 'I don't need any help'
3 - 'I'm not going to tell you what this gun was'

While Belle may have written a good book, and may have identified the firearm, it seems like it would have been wise to post a photo of the weapon, or at least indicate what the weapon was. And since this is a site where people like to learn, and share knowledge, there might have been really good comments about it.

In the end, she might also have learned more about the firearm. She mentioned initially that she knew zilch. Someone might talk to her about the book, and ask her a question like, 'why did you put a picture of a Whitworth sniper rifle on the cover of your book?(for example)', and she might wish she knew a little more.
