How many do we know?

These two photographs were taken within minutes of each other of the same subject group. Each has its advantages in terms of resolution of detail. I was curious when presented to this esteemed group of historians how many of the gentlemen pictured could be identified?

General Meade sitting. ? Hancock to his left ? Rosecrans 4 L . ? Great photo !
That gnome standing beside Meade is NOT the tall and by-then-becoming-portly Hancock - it's Rufus Ingalls, Inspector General of the AOP as I remember and then a brigadier from the spacing of buttons on his coat. This is a photo of Meade and his staff, so there are NO commanders of corps, divisions, or brigades present, including Rosecrans who by this time was probably commanding at St. Louis. I believe the only other general officers present are Chief-of-Artillery Henry Hunt, standing two to the right of Ingalls and also wearing the paired buttons of a brigadier; Maj. Gen. Andrew Humphries seated beside Meade in the top picture, then serving as Meade's Chief-of-Staff; and Marsena R. Patrick, Provost Marshal General of the army, the Santa Claus-looking fellow seated next to Humphries at top and Meade at bottom. The various staff colonels, aides-de-camp, etc. I don't recognize, though I believe the hatless officer in the front row wearing a double-breasted frock coat standing two to the left of Patrick is Dr. Johnathan Letterman, medical director of the army.

Sure enough that’s Inspector General Ingalls all right. Never suspected someone would pick off so many with one swift swing of his sword! Should have known. A better photo of Rufus Ingalls...

The man behind Meade's left shoulder ( 2nd Row ) I believe is Lt. Charles E. Pease 44th NY Hat off on top picture. I have a few documents signed by him. He also went back and forth across the lines with surrender papers at Appomatox .
Way to go Badgercwcollector! Now we’re up to 7 identified. I’m sure you’ve already seen this close up of Lt. Pease taken from this same group photo. Sharp looking soldier. Someone certainly did a nice job enlarging.
Sounds like you have some very nice historical documents that would be fun to see.

Pease got to experience the end of the war in a great way . Meade sent Pease to Genl. Grant with a letter from Genl. Lee . Pease escorted Grant to meet with Lee at Appomatox and introduced to Lee. When they were done Grant ordered Pease to escort Lee back through the lines. He died in 1886. I will add some photo's of my documents Monday

My apologies

None needed. The ambiguity of the word makes it easy to use the tag in an unintended way and not recognize it. However a tag (and especially this one) might keep some members from looking up, and potentially participating in, the thread. I´m not sure if you´re still able to edit your original post so you can remove the tag from the title but if not you could ask a moderator to do so.

I’m slowly learning, on several levels. I couldn’t figure a way to make the changes so made the request upstairs. Thank you thank you. JS
