From Dr. John Darby's report on Hood's wounding: "Sept 20-At a little after 2 p.m. was wounded by a Minnie ball. The ball entered on the external and posterior portion of the thigh below the middle of the middle third as it was resting in the saddle with the leg & foot everted-the body and head of Gen Hood being turned to the right, as he was looking back at the line of a Division, he was leading in position for an advance on the enemy. The apex of the ball struck the outer and posterior of the bone corresponding to the entrance of the ball, producing a fracture of five inches." Source: Hood, Stephen M. (2015).
