Ok everyone, feast your eyes on these magnificent pieces of insignia. If you are prone to fainting you better sit down because I'm sharing a rare, rare, did I mention rare set of Pay Department paymaster epaulettes! These are in exceptional condition and feature the familiar red Moroccan leather padding, fully functioning attachment bars, 1/2 inch bullion fringe, PD pillows and the original japanned tin case
I noted in a previous post about identifying rank on dress epaulettes. 1/8 for lieutenants, 1/4 for captains and 1/2 for majors to generals. We can further deduce the rank from the lack of insignia on the board. Both 2nd lieutenants and majors were to have no insignia on the board one because 2nd lieutenant didn't have insignia and second the gold major leaf would not be noticeable on a gold background. We know the fringe diameter so that makes these a major rank.
The paymaster general was a colonel, after the war it was the rank of BG. LT colonels are deputy paymasters and majors were paymasters. I have only ever seen 2 pairs of pay department epaulettes but they were both lower ranks. These still shine as if they were made yesterday too!
