Hello I am going to Gettysburg early July. I would love to hire a guide for a day who is physically fit and wants to give me a rigorous tour of the park. I would love to me an amateur historian who really knows his stuff. does anyone have any suggestions on how I can hire such a person. Thx

There are several members here who can perform that function -- they can volunteer or give you a name of an LBG.

I highly recommend a LBG for your trip...the information they know the battlefield cold.
Ahead of your trip, read up on the battle and have an area or two you'd really like to focus on with your guide.
There are a ton of resources if you are interested in doing your own tour too, shoot me a note and I'll point you in the right direction.

Definitely go with a LBG at least once. They know tons of info and can tailor their tour to what you're interested in. Cash mentioned Larry, who is a good one. I also liked Tim Smith and Rich Kohr, but then again, I haven't ever had a bad tour with an LBG.

LBG. Absolutely. The place is so big, if you want to cover more than one section you'll have to drive at least a bit. An LBG can do that for you so YOU can goggle at the sights...they know how to avoid crowds, where to park (not a small consideration!) and will help you maximize your time.

I used an LBG and brought a notebook with a ton of questions from my readings. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. Worth every single penny and a tip, too. I would be absolutely thrilled hwvr., to sign-up for one of Ed Bearss' renowned tours. He is legendary. (Entertaining, too.)

Back during the 135th Anniversary Gettysburg reenactment I traveled there on a chartered bus with members of several North Texas units. We arrived a day early just so we could tour the battlefield with one of the LBG's who tailored the tour according to the Texas interests of most of our members. A highlight was when we parked the bus in Devils Den and hiked up the trail leading to the summit of Little Round Top to see it as the attacking Texans would have; thankfully, the bus driver brought the bus to us so we didn't have to walk back to it!

Do it quickly. Ed doesn't have many years left.

That's not a horrible climb, but I sure wouldn't want to do it in 85 degree heat and humidity--being fired upon.

If you have relatives who fought there, find out which unit and let the LBG know. He/she will make a point to take you to where that unit fought. Also if there is a particular partof the battlefield you want to see or know more of.
Tip the LBG well. Enjoy your trip.

LBG Larry Korczyk is leading a 2-day, 15-mile long hike this weekend. He's probably in good enough shape for you.
Cash, How can I find out about such an event in advance? At any national battlefield for that matter.
