I learned about Henry VanderWeyde in my researching of the Sutherlin Mansion and Sutherlin family.
The Sutherlin Mansion is now home to the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History in Danville, Viriginia. The Mansion was the home of William Thomas Sutherlin. It is known as the "Last Capitol of the Confederacy" as President Jefferson Davis resided here from April 3-10, 1865.
The Museum was recently presented with a gift, "Sketchbook of Prison Life" by Henry VanderWeyde. He was an artist who served as an Union officier during the Civil War. He was captured at the Battle of Cedar Creek and held as a prisoner of war in Danville's Warehouse/Prisons (most likely Prison #3). The sketchbook is from his time at the prison from 1864-1865.
Henry VanderWeyde was born in the Netherlands but grew up in New York. At the age of 22 he was attending Copper Art Institute when he enlisted in Company G of the 7th Regiment of the New York State Militia in 1863. During the war he became a Captain and Breveted Major and served as Aide de Camp on the staff of two generals of the Army of the Potomac. After his exchange at the end of the war, he became a Provost Marshall. It was in this capacity that he received the Mayor's (Sutherlin) surrender of Danville and had quarters in the Sutherlin Mansion.
After the war VanderWeyde moved with his wife to Paris. He later went to London, where he enjoyed a career as a portrait artist. He died on Feb. 24, 1924 in London at the age of 84.
