Yeah they are nice.
@JOHN42768 is yours a real one or did you put the sight on the receiver of a replica?
It is Original .44RF. Serial number in 25xx in between known numbers, it's range puts it very likely used by 66th Il.. Confirmed numbers below and above. Early range models had both mounting dovetails for rear sight

I'm guessing he would be holding onto the tubular magazine that runs the full length of the barrel with his forward hand or gloves.
In action the barrel might get very hot. Holding the magazine or using a sock as an insulator could help. Reportedly, some people resorted to urinating on the barrel.
 
Part 4 of my Henry Rifle article has just been delivered. This completes the four part series in The Winchester Collector magazine. It has been both fun and an honor to see the article in print.
