Help with identification of regiment

I found this image and medal with my grandparents' wedding certificate, and I think it is of one of their grandparents. Their grandfathers served in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Is there anything in the photos or in the medal/insignia that could give a hint as to which regiment this soldier was in?

Great photo! Unfortunately it's going to be near-impossible to nail down a regiment from just the photo alone. He's wearing a standard 9 button federal frock. The backdrop might help nail down the location but most of them are unidentified.

Edit: I believe I've seen people refer to the medals as masonic, if you can figure out which if any relatives were masons that might help your quest.

I believe that hand painted backdrop may have been identified. Let me see if I can find it.

Unfortunately @RGill there is no way to identify the regiment this Union soldier served in.

Thank you. The grandfather of the Marriage Certificate (died 1996) found with the Civil War image was a Mason and Towanda was fairly close to his home. I don't know if it was his medal or the person in the photo.

Wow! This is great information. Thanks. I think the soldier in my image is either Martin Van Buren Horton of PA or John Sylvester Lyon of NJ, but I'm not certain.
