3rd Great Granddad Charles Quinn Thorn. Charles was born in Alabama. He lived in Franklin County Alabama 1850,1860,1870 and 1880 census. He married Elizabeth Carolina Malone. She was living with her son Charles S. Thorn (2nd Great Granddad) 1900 in Limestone County Alabama. I believe Charles Q's father to be Presley Thorn II.
I got to thinking that Charles might have served in the ACW. I got to looking and came across a pension application where a Elizabeth C Thorn applied as a widow in 1898 Limestone County Alabama. It was for
C I Thorn. It said he was a Private company L 4th Alabama. The "I" could be Q maybe.

Elbert Perry Thorn (1826) who I believe to be Charles Q's brother was in the 4th Alabama Cavalry company E.

Any way to know if this is my Charles and Elizabeth? If he served from Franklin County would Elizabeth had put that County, Limestone because that is where she lived when she applied?

Thanks for any help.

This is a page from Elizabeth's application and the soldier referenced is certainly C. Q. Thorn.

The Thorn surname is familiar to me so I looked up a family tree on Ancestry and your Charles Q. Thorn and my Martin R. Thorn who also served in the Civil War in the 2nd NC Infantry share a common ancestor. Thomas Martin Thorn who was born around 1685 in Surry County, Virginia and Jane Merryman his wife are the 2x great grandparents of both men. My ancestor did not survive the Civil War. He died in Lovettesville, Virginia of disease in October 1862 leaving behind orphaned children because both of the women he had married had died in childbirth before the war.

That's cool!
I remember seeing Merryman.

Could you tell if Charles Q's father was Presley Thorn II (1791)?. I haven't been able to prove it yet. Someone posted on Find A Grave that his father was William Hightower Thorn, Presley's brother. I'm not buying it yet but he could be.

I went back to Ancestry and I looked at both Presley Thorn and William Thorn. I found a family bible reference that someone had put in Presley's information listing his children and I did not see Charles Q. Thorn listed. The year Charles was born (1827) this reference shows a daughter named Mary being born. Based on this I would lean towards William Thorn and Sarah Hughes being the parents of Charles Quinn Thorn. William was born in 1807 and Charles would have been his oldest child.

Looking at various family trees, some did list Presley as the father of Charles Thorn but the majority had William Thorn as being his father.
