I agree with you - if all you want to see is one or two records, then a subscription to Fold3 is just too expensive, and there tends to not be a lot on WW II vets anyway due to privacy concerns, since some of them are still living.
John C McArthur is just too common a name to look for. There was a registration card for a Moses Vernon, b. 1911, but I don't know if that's your guy or not.

As a side note, there were also three Moses Vernons who fought in the Civil War, although none from Mississippi - they were from Georgia, Arkansas, and Missouri.
Check Fold3 around Memorial Day - they usually put some records available for free to mark the occasion.
