Trying to find out if my 3rd great grandfather fought. His name was Benjamin Franklin Young. He was born in 1844 in Davidson county, Tenneessee. There is a B.F. Young listed in the 11th tenneessee infantry on fold3 from company A. Which was a company made up of men from Davidson. Can anybody with a fold3 account be so generous as to post the information behind the paywall below? Thank you.

There was also Tennessee Confederate Service listed for a B.F. Young in C Company 14th Cavalry, B Company 22nd Cavalry, and Benjamin F. Young E Company 32nd Infantry. There was also a Tennessee Union soldier in Company G 1st Cavalry but that was an East Tennessee regiment.

He had 3 brothers. Born in 1842, 1838, and 1842. Two of them. William and James show up in the 18th tenneessee infantry CSA. In companies hailing from Davidson county. Not sure if its them, but the odds have to be crazy for that not to be, right?

Unlike my Mississippi kinfolks, my Tennessee ancestors and their cousins didn't always serve and didn't seem to make much of a fuss about it when they did. So I'm not sure the obituary would be a big indicator. If BF Young was born in 1844 he would have been too young to sign up in the rush of enlistments at the beginning of the War. He may have just decided to stay home and help his folks, especially after Nashville was in Union hands.

The B.F. Young in the 11thTN, enlisted may 1st, 1862. He would have been 17 and a half. Birthday was in September. Could have easily lied to the recruiter. I mean hell you had 14 year olds writing ''18'' on their shoes and getting in.

If I remember correctly the 1900 Census BF Young gave his birthdate as September, 1862.
Nah, that's not him. He would have been an infant during the war. I still think the 11th tenneessee guy is my grand-dad. The company he was in contained men from Davidson County. He would have been 17/18 when he enlisted. Just hard to nail that down. Davidson county has always been a huge county. Even during the 1860s.

Okay, I pulled up the Census. He's got September 1844 as his birth date. Martha is living with him, she has Jan 1846 for her birth date. They are living on a farm they own in Davidson County. Martha is listed as having had 9 children, 7 of whom are still living.
Yeah that's him. Is that the B.F. Young from the 11th tenneessee? If he used ''B.F.'' on that census that may tell us. Good chance he used that when he enlisted.

He uses Benjamin F. in 1900.

I did a bit of looking in Ancestry. I don't find anybody (and there are a lot of quite reasonable looking trees online) that thinks BF served in the War. That doesn't mean he didn't but usually things like that don't stay hidden. I checked the Tennessee Confederate Pension index and there is a Benjamin Franklin Young who got a pension, but he lived in Madison County and his wife was named Eugenia. Since it appears that Martha out lived BF by quite a few years I would expect her to have applied for a pension is she was able.

I would say if you think the man in the 11th TN is a possibility then the next thing to do would be to follow his records. If he is a different man you will soon find that out and you can eliminate the idea that he is your ancestor.

Yeah. Maybe Granddad went to the 11th and his brothers joined the 18th. Says on ancestry he (Benjamin) got married in 1864.
Distant cousins of mine John Lewis Hillenburg Jr and John Lewis Hillenburg III:

He and his father enlisted in the Union army during the Civil war. both men were held prisoners by the Confederates in the Andersonville prison. His father was held for 11 months and John spent six months there.

John enlisted with Co. F, 93rd Reg. Indiana Infantry on Christmas Eve of 1863 and received an honorable discharge on Nov 10, 1865.
