Tennessee had a militia unit in 1861 that wore similar uniforms, at least as far as the hat goes. There's a photo of them at the TSLA website, taken from a building, as they parade through Nashville.

Many volunteer units from ALL the states would and did wear similar uniforms and equipment. Additionally, many other countries armies wore or carried similar. There seems to be nothing definitive to identify this image beyond the fact that it is probably a pre/early war American, based on the wreath and letters.

The M1858 forage cap was uniquely American

Here's what I have observed:

-Wears a forge style cap with "F R" in a wreath

-M1855 Riflemen's Belt with bayonet for a Mississippi Rifle

-Has wide stripe down pants with another color of trim on the outside

-Pants seem to be of a highly refined/polished/slick material

-Three buttons are on one side of the cuff and only one on the other

-Has a false button hole collar

-Tin has "Neff's Pat 19Feb56" stamped in it

My very novice assessment/feel is that this is probably a Southern pre-war militia uniform that went into Confederate service. I have attached a list of the known "F R" units that served the Confederacy. I know this group is very knowledgeable and hopefully someone can relate a particular item that helps narrow down the identity. Please comment as to anything you notice, observe, or speculate.

Is the photograph in your possession and if so was wondering if there was a chance to blow up to see button detail. Most certainly US militia uniform, due to cap, wreath and bayonet (bayonet is either Mississippi or M1855 and not French M1842).

And he's certainly wearing the U. S. rifleman's belt with its distinctive buckle. (M.1855?)

Impressive image and almost certainly a militiaman. The rife belt helps makes this a wonderful image.
