I love this picture. I am not sure why? Maybe it just really brings the period to life for me.

It was recently for sale on eBay, allegedly from an estate in central Illinois, but that does not necessarily mean anything. Picture could be from anywhere. No writing on the back.

Is there anything identifiable to you in the picture? What year? Location? Identity of Company or Regiment? Thanks for your help.

We were fortunate to have Tom Moss with us at the Shiloh who brought a Henry that was from Corinth. He also brought a reproduction we got to fire.

Birge's Western Sharpshooters makes sense. They seem to be armed with a variety of weapons of varying lengths. The two on the left of the photo enlargement showing the officer and color bearer appear to be holding half stock target rifles. Great photo of what appears to be a company of westerners, given the majority of slouch hats. Most are wearing sack coats, with a few frocks and jackets thrown in, and posed in front of a well-stockaded winter camp. The camp is probably Camp Davis, south of Corinth, which was stockaded. the Sharpshooters were stationed there from October 1862 to November 1863. In Autumn of '63 they began equipping themselves with privately purchased Henry Rifles, which may be some of the shorter weapons seen in the picture, mixed in with the Dimick "plains rifles" that had been initially issued to them in St. Louis in 1861.

It looks as if Camp Davis (Post above) was built resembling a small village and then adding a stockade fence. There are enough well constructed houses, cabins and barracks that I wonder in the end whether they were usable for establishment as a small town. After the war the displaced should have appreciated these accommodations. Does anyone have any references where this actually occurred not only here, but elsewhere too?
Lubliner.
