Can anyone help identify the cover photo from the book "Chickamauga and other Civil War Stories" edited by Shelby Foote? I've searched the national archives without success. It is one of my favorite photos and I would like to know the setting etc. Thank You.

This image appears on the dust jacket of the Time/Life Voices of the Civil Wat series volume, Soldier Life. It's credited to the National Archives.

Excellent series, BTW.

Ken Burns used it in The Civil War....first episode, and the line is "The Civil War was fought in 10,000 places from......."

Thanks. Does it reference a date/time?

...if this pic is modern they're the most authentic reenactors out there. Ha

Yeah, photos of living soldiers are usually Union and that is what I've always assumed in this photo. I wish there was a better resolution image. I couldn't find this image in the Library of Congress collection (http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/cwp/) which usually has higher quality images and better descriptions.

Why are some images found in the LOC collection and others found in the National Archives collection where CivilWarParlor found it?
