Help identifying a sword blade

Friend of mine gave me this sword blade he literally tripped over and a wooded area just out of atlanta. It's covered with dozens of markings and Engravings, but most are two weathered to identify or read being that it was in the woods for over 150 years judging by the date 1861 inscribed in the blade. Can anyone help me identify what this may be? I'm assuming Civil War time frame

I agree that it looks foreign. Maybe the Philippines? That area has a huge variety of blade forms including influence from Europe.

Billy Bob Thorton's ancestor opines that it might be some sort of slingblade, for agriculture hacking and slashing and whatnot.
